Welcome to FindBiometrics’ digest of identity industry news. Here’s what you need to know about the world of digital identity and biometrics today:

    Nigeria Plans Airport Biometrics Projects

Nigeria’s Minister of State for Budget and National Planning, Prince Clem Ikanada Agba, has said that government authorities are planning to implement facial recognition technology in the country’s airports. The announcement came as government authorities hosted the Japanese ambassador and a team from Japan-based NEC, whose facial recognition technology has been widely deployed in airports around the world. Minister Agba said the airport biometrics projects would begin with pilot programs at the Lagos and Abuja International Airports, and would be established via grant agreements between the Nigerian and Japanese governments.

Panera Teams With Amazon on Biometric Payments

Panera Bread is bringing Amazon’s palm scanning checkout system, Amazon One, to select restaurants. The baked goods chain will enable customers to link their MyPanera loyalty account to their Amazon One payment credentials, automating the rewards points process when customers make purchases. Amazon One lets end users pay for good without the need to present cash, a payment card, or any other physical token beside their palm. The biometric payments solution is an important focal point in a recently filed lawsuit against Amazon that accuses the company of violating New York City’s Biometric Identifier Information Law.

Regula Announces ‘Single-Vendor Solution’ for Selfie Verification

Regula has combined its document reading SDK and facial recognition SDK into a unified, “single-vendor solution”. The solution delivers selfie-based identity verification supported by a recently updated Regula Document Reader solution that can automatically detect whether a photo in a given physical ID has been manipulated. “The more separate technologies and products that need special configuration there are, the more chances that some parts of the IDV process could be neglected,” explained Regula CTO Ihar Kliashchou. “That is why we’re also witnessing a strong demand for a single-vendor solution when it comes to identity verification.”

NordPass Enables Biometric 2FA for Business Users

NordPass has launched a new two-factor authentication feature for business users of its mobile app, effectively turning it into an authenticator app in addition to a password manager. Any account with 2FA enabled will prompt a user seeking access with a time-based one-time passcode (TOTP) that can only be unlocked with a biometric scan on the mobile device, enabling a high level of security. The security system’s announcement comes after NordPass enabled support for passkeys near the start of the year.

Contractor Management Platform Embraces Digital ID

Avetta, the provider of a contractor management platform, has embraced digital ID, announcing a new “Workforce by Avetta” mobile app that lets contractors complete training and verify their credentials to access work sites using the mobile app’s digital identity feature. The app features two-factor authentication, with support for QR code scanning and Bluetooth Low-Energy communications.

NatWest Leverages Digital Identity Tech From OneID

The UK based financial services firm NatWest Group has launched a digital identity system designed to help businesses to quickly and easily verify customer identity by using information held by the bank. The Customer Attribute Sharing service is the product of a collaboration with OneID, and is designed to support functions such as letting customers verify their age when purchasing age-restricted goods and services, and to automatically update businesses when information such as home address is changed. NatWest says that one e-signature company has already used the service to reduce the time needed for document signing from five minutes to 45 seconds.
