Ethics, biometrics and AI: the good, the bad and the ugly – Why European Parliament’s concerns are probably disproportionate

    January 31, 2023 at 12:00-1:30pm CEST

The European Association for Biometrics (EAB) is hosting a virtual lunch talk with Dr Emilio Mordini, member of the CERIS Expert Group at DG Home and EAB ethical committee chair.

In June 2021, the European Parliament (EP) asked for a permanent ban on the automated recognition of individuals in public spaces. Parliament calls for the use of private facial recognition databases and predictive policing based on behavioural data to be forbidden.

Dr Emilio Mordini argues that the European Parliament’s reasons for requesting a permanent ban on the automated recognition of individuals in public spaces are partly misplaced and stem from an overemphasis on the technological potential of AI for recognition technology and an underestimation of its inherent limitations.

Attendance via Zoom is free but registration is required.
